Alaska Airlines
Alaska Airlines Reservations
United States: 800-252-7522
International: see website
Carry-On Pet Policy:
Alaska Airlines permits passengers 18 years or older to travel with small pets in the cabin of its aircraft for a fee of $100 each way. A customer may travel with a maximum of two carry-on pet containers in the main cabin when the adjacent seat is purchased by the same customer. Pets allowed in the passenger cabin include dogs, cats, rabbits, household birds, and tropical fish. Dogs and cats must be at least eight weeks old and must have been fully weaned for at least five days prior to travel. Pets may be transported in the passenger cabin on flights to/from Canada and Mexico. However, due to Hawaii's pet quarantine laws, Alaska Airlines' policy is to not allow pets on flights to/from Hawaii, either in the cabin or as checked baggage. All pets crossing state borders, with the exception of guide dogs, are required by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to have a valid health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 30 days of travel. If an animal is being transported by a breeder, dealer, or research facility, then the health certificate must have been issued within 10 days. All animals crossing state borders to a cold weather destination are required to have a veterinarian's note on the health certificate that they are acclimated to temperatures below 45°. It is the responsibility of the customer to obtain this certification. Proof of rabies vaccination is required for animals traveling within the state of Alaska or when traveling across state lines. Proof of Parvo Virus vaccination is required before an animal can be transported to Nome or Kotzebue.
Checked Bagage/Cargo Policy:
Most small domesticated pets, including cats, dogs, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, household birds, non-poisonous reptiles, pot bellied pigs, rabbits, and tropical fish are permitted to travel in the climate-controlled baggage and cargo compartments on Alaska Airlines' flights. Other pets may be accepted with approval. If you are traveling with your pet, the fee is $100 (each way) for pets and containers having a combined weight of 149 pounds or less. For heavier pets and carriers, passengers should contact Alaska Airlines directly for pricing information. When placing your pet in the checked baggage compartment, you should check in at least one hour, but no more than two hours, prior to your scheduled departure time. If your trip includes a transfer on Alaska Airlines or Horizon Air, Alaska Airlines will allow a maximum connection time of four hours for your pet at the connection city. If your trip includes a transfer to another airline, you must allow time to pick up your pet in the baggage claim area and re-check your pet with the connecting airline. Alaska Airlines does not transfer pets to other airlines. Due to the extreme temperatures that may be experienced in the cargo area of its aircraft, Alaska Airlines reserves the right to decline acceptance of animals for travel if temperatures are anticipated to fall within extreme ranges. Please contact Alaska Airline directly for more information if you are traveling during periods where the weather may be a factor.
Carrier Guidelines:
Pets traveling in the cabin must remain in an approved pet carrier at all times while onboard the aircraft, and no part of your pet's body (including head and tail) may protrude from the container. Since the maximum size of the pet carrier varies, depending upon the type of aircraft on which you are flying, you should check Alaska Airlines' website to confirm the exact dimensions allowed. Generally, pet carriers are limited in size to 24" long x 14-19" wide x 9-11" high. Your pet must be able to stand up and move comfortably about the container. For pets traveling as checked baggage, a 500-size kennel is the largest pet carrier that Alaska Airlines will accept. Please contact Alaska Airlines directly for more information about restrictions on pet carriers as checked baggage.
Pet Reservations:
Because Alaska Airlines limits the number of pets per flight, it is essential that you reserve a ticket for yourself as well as your pet as soon as possible after confirming your travel plans. The First Class cabin can accommodate a total of one small pet per flight, and the main cabin can accommodate a total of up to five small pets per flight. Simply call 1-800-252-7522 and let the reservation agent know that you are flying with your pet, and the agent will confirm availability for you and your pet.
Air Canada
Carry-On Pet Policy:
Starting July 1, 2009, Air Canada will allow small cats and dogs (maximum 10 kg / 22 lbs combined weight for the pet and carrier) to travel with their owners in the passenger cabin of Air Canada and Jazz flights. The cost is $50.00 each way on flights within Canada or between Canada and the U.S. The fee is $100.00 each way for all other flights. The airline permits only 2 to 4 pets in the cabin per flight, so you should make reservations for your pets as soon as possible after you have confirmed your own travel plans. Passengers traveling with pets should check-in for their flight at least 30 minutes earlier than the normal recommended check-in time.
Checked Bagage/Cargo Policy:
Pets are permitted to travel on the same flight as their owners in the baggage compartment of Air Canada's aircraft only. The fee for travel within Canada and the United States is $105 each way, excluding taxes. The fee for international travel is $270 each way. Air Canada has a blackout period from June 20 to September 10 and December 18 to January 7. During these periods, pets may not travel as checked baggage on Air Canada flights. Please note that temperature controlled and ventilated baggage compartments are available only on certain aircraft, and Air Canada reserves the right to restrict pet travel during times when weather may not permit safe travel for your pets. If you are traveling during periods of extreme weather, please refer to Air Canada's website for further restrictions on pet travel due to weather conditions.
Carrier Guidelines:
Pets traveling in the passenger cabin must remain in a leak-proof and well ventilated soft- or hard-sided carrier measuring no greater than 23 cm x 40 cm x 55 cm (9" x 15.5" x 21.5"). For the safety and comfort of the pet, the pet must be able to comfortably sit up and turn around. No part of the pet may extend outside the kennel. The pet must remain in the kennel and the kennel must remain under the seat and closed at all times. The carrier will count as the one standard carry-on item which you are allowed to bring on board. For pets traveling as checked baggage, only hard-sided kennels are accepted. No part of your pet is allowed to protrude from the carrier. Wire carriers are not permitted. All carriers must be secure and leakproof. Collapsible kennels are not accepted. The pet carrier must be big enough to allow your pet to stand, turn around and lie down comfortably. If the pet carrier does not allow the animal to do this, Air Canada will refuse transport. Any wheels must be removed from pet carriers prior to check-in. Pets over 31 pounds (14 kg) must have their own separate kennel. A maximum of two dogs not weighing more than 31 pounds (14 kg) each may travel together in the same kennel.
Pet Reservations:
Air Canada requires that you pre-register your pet for travel on the same flight as yours by contacting Air Canada Reservations within 24 hours of booking travel. Simply call Air Canada Reservations at 1-888-247-2262 and let the agent know that you are traveling with your pet. Pets that have not been pre-registered with Air Canada Reservations will not be accepted at the airport. Dimensions of the kennel and weight and breed of your pet must be given at the time of your call to Air Canada Reservations. A pet and kennel with a combined weight of less than 70 pounds (32.5 kg) is accepted for travel in the baggage compartment provided the owner is flying on the same flight. A passenger may not travel with more than two animals. Two pets traveling in one kennel are counted as two pets regardless of combined weight. The number of animals accepted is limited by aircraft type and may require the modification of your reservation to allow Air Canada to accommodate your pet.
AirTran Airways
AirTran Airways Reservations
United States: 800-247-8726
International: see website
Carry-On Pet Policy:
AirTran Airways accepts small, domesticated cats, dogs and birds that will fit in an approved carrier under the seat in front of you. The pet fee is $69.00 each way. Only three pets are allowed per flight, so advance reservations must be made when bringing a pet onboard an AirTran Airways flight.
Checked Bagage/Cargo Policy:
Due to the extreme temperatures that may be experienced in cargo areas, AirTran Airways does not transport pets as checked baggage.
Carrier Guidelines:
Pet carriers are limited to maximum dimensions of 17" long x 12" wide x 8.5" high. Carriers exceeding these dimensions will not fit onboard AirTran's aircraft. The carrier must be leak-proof and ventilated on at least two sides. Your pet must remain in the carrier and under the seat for the duration of the flight.
Pet Reservations:
Since the number of pets allowed onboard is limited, it is essential that you make a reservation for yourself and your pet as soon as possible after confirming your travel plans. Simply call AirTran Airways at 1-800-247-8726 and tell the reservation agent that you are traveling with a pet.
American Airlines
American Airlines Reservations
United States: 800-433-7300
International: see website
Carry-On Pet Policy:
American Airlines accepts small cats and dogs in the cabin of the aircraft on both domestic and international flights (no other animals are allowed). The fee for pets traveling in the cabin is $100 per carrier (each way), and the combined weight of the pet and carrier may not exceed 20 pounds. Pets must remain completely in the carrier with the door closed and under the seat during the entire time that the pet is in the aircraft. Passengers traveling with pets must check-in at the airline ticket counter. At this time, curbside or self-service check-in is not allowed. Please allow extra time beyond normal check-in guidelines.
Checked Bagage/Cargo Policy:
American Airlines restricts pets in cargo to cats and dogs only. The fee for pets traveling in cargo is $150 per carrier (each way). Checked pets do not need a reservation. However, travelers (especially dog show participants) should be aware that capacity is sometimes reached, and checked pets are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. So, it is best to check in early. However, checked pets will not be accepted more than four hours prior to your flight time. Passengers should also be mindful that American Airlines will not allow pet travel in cargo if extreme temperatures are anticipated. Please visit American Airlines' website for more information.
Carrier Guidelines:
For pets traveling in the cabin, the maximum size for pet carriers is 23" long x 13" wide x 9" high. Animals must be able to stand up, turn around and lie down in a natural position in the kennel. Soft-sided pet carriers are accepted as long as they are constructed of water-repellent, padded nylon with mesh ventilation on two or more sides. Also note that the pet carrier counts as either a passenger's one carry-on bag or personal item. For pets traveling in cargo, pets must have room to stand/turn around, sit and lie down in a natural position while in their carriers. Carriers must be constructed of wood, metal, plastic, similar material, leak-proof, escape proof and door must fasten securely and need ventilation on two sides in addition to the door. Carriers must also have a water container with outside access for filling, in case a delay occurs. Collapsible carriers (those which can fold down flat) can not be accepted due to the risk of collapse during transport. The maximum size for checked carriers is a series 500 kennel with the following dimensions: 40" long x 27" wide x 30" high. However, this size carrier is not accepted on the Boeing MD-80 (S80). Pet carriers in cargo on MD-80s must be able to fit through the cargo door while remaining in an upright position. MD-80 cargo doors are 29" high x 53" wide. Series 700 carriers are not allowed on any aircraft. The maximum weight of a checked pet and carrier (combined) cannot exceed 100 pounds.
Pet Reservations:
American Airlines limits the number of pets permitted to fly in the cabin to seven per flight (a maximum of two in first class and five in coach), so it is important to book your pet's ticket as early as possible. You should call 1-800-433-7300 for reservations, and tell the agent that you are traveling with your pet. A maximum of two pets per ticketed passenger is permitted on American Airlines flights. The pet fee is based upon the number of pet carriers, not the number of pets. American Airlines permits up to two pets in a container as long as the pets are between eight weeks and two months old, and weigh no more than 20 pounds. Otherwise, the limit is one pet per carrier. Special pet guidelines apply for travel to international destinations and Hawaii. Please refer to American Airlines' website for more details.
Continental Airlines
Continental Airlines Reservations
United States: 800-525-0280
International: see website
Carry-On Pet Policy:
Continental Airlines allows domesticated cats, dogs, pet rabbits and household birds to be carried in the aircraft cabin on most U.S. flights within the U.S. An in-cabin pet may be carried in lieu of a carry-on bag and is subject to a $125.00 fee (each way). For travel outside the U.S. with an in-cabin pet, you should contact Continental Airlines directly for information on availability and charges. Pets are not permitted to travel in cabin on flights to/from Hawaii. Only one pet per passenger is allowed in cabin. Pets under eight weeks old are not permitted. Pets are not permitted in the BusinessFirst cabin of Boeing 757, 767 or 777 aircraft due to inadequate storage space under the seat.
Checked Bagage/Cargo Policy:
Continental Airlines does not accept pets as checked baggage. However, the airline does allow pets to be transported in cargo as part of Continental's PetSafe program. For more information about this program, please visit Continental's website.
Carrier Guidelines:
When traveling with their owners in the passenger cabin, pets must be carried in an approved pet carrier. Your pet must be able to stand up, turn around and move about comfortably in the carrier. The carrier must fit completely under the seat in front of you, and the pet must remain in the carrier at all times while on board the aircraft. The maximum dimensions for in-cabin pet carriers are 17" long x 12.5" wide x 8" high. The pet carrier must be sturdy and properly ventilated. To prevent accidental injury, no part of your pet's body can protrude through any openings in the carrier. Carriers made exclusively from wire are not accepted.
Pet Reservations:
Because the number of pets allowed on each flight is usually limited to five (one in First or Business Class and four in the economy cabin), it is important to make reservations for yourself and your pet as soon as possible after your travel plans are confirmed. You can call 1-800-525-0280 to make your reservation and let the agent know that you are traveling with your pet. Continental is also one of the few airlines which now allow you to make reservations online for both you and your pet. Visit Continental's website for more information.
Delta Airlines
Delta Airlines Reservations
United States: 800-221-1212
International: see website
Carry-On Pet Policy:
Delta permits passengers to bring small pets in the cabin on most flights for a fee of $150 each way (to be collected at check-in). Pets are not permitted on flights to Hawaii. Check Delta's website for more information on transporting pets to Hawaii or international destinations. Pets permitted in the cabin include dogs, cats, and household birds. Your pet must be small enough to fit comfortably in a pet carrier under the seat in front of you. Pets must be at least eight weeks old. A pet in cabin counts as one piece of carry-on luggage. Passengers traveling with pets must check in at the airline ticket counter. Curbside and self-service check-in is not available. Please allow extra time beyond normal check-in guidelines.
Checked Bagage/Cargo Policy:
Cats, dogs, household birds, guinea pigs, rabbits, and hamsters are accepted as checked baggage. Due to seasonal weather conditions, Delta Airlines does not allow pets to travel as checked baggage from May 15 through September 15. During other periods, Delta will not allow pet travel in cargo if extreme temperatures are anticipated. When the weather permits, pets may travel in a temperature-controlled and pressurized compartment. To ensure your pet's comfort and safety and your peace of mind, review weather, health, and pet carrier requirements on Delta's website. Passengers with pets traveling as checked baggage must pay a fee of $275 (each way) on flights for travel within the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico and $550 (each way) for travel outside the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Passengers are permitted a total of two pet carriers as checked baggage on each flight. Visit Delta's website for more specific restrictions, especially if your flight plans involve multiple airline carriers.
Carrier Guidelines:
For pets traveling in the cabin, pet carriers may be either hard- or soft-sided and must prevent escape of your pet into the cabin. Because the maximum allowed size of pet carriers varies among Delta and its various Connection Carriers, it is important for you to verify the permitted carrier size when making your Delta reservation. Your pet must remain inside the pet carrier while in the airport boarding area, during boarding and deboarding, as well as througout the duration of each flight.
Pet Reservations:
Whether your pet is traveling in the cabin with you or in cargo as checked baggage, it is important to contact Delta by telephone to reserve tickets for yourself and your pets as far in advance as possible after you have confirmed your travel plans. Delta and its airline partners each have their own policies regarding how many pets may be carried in cabin and in cargo and size restrictions on pet carriers that can travel in cargo. If a pet has to transfer from a Delta flight to one of its partner Connection Carriers, the Delta flight must be confirmed at least 48 hours before the scheduled departure time of the Connection Carrier flight. Two pets of the same size and species (generally puppies, kittens or toy dogs) may be allowed in one pet carrier, provided they are able to comfortably fit in one carrier and each weigh less than 20 pounds. If they meet these criteria, they will be charged as only one pet.
Frontier Airlines
Frontier Airlines Reservations
United States: 800-432-1359
International: see website
Carry-On Pet Policy:
Frontier Airlines no longer allows pets to travel in the passenger cabin of its aircraft.
Checked Bagage/Cargo Policy:
Although pets are not allowed to travel in the passenger cabin, Frontier Airlines does permit travelers to bring their pets on their flight in the cargo area with checked baggage. Pets must be at least eight weeks old and in good health to travel. Only one dog or cat is permitted per pet carrier, except that two puppies or kittens may travel in the same container if they are between eight weeks and six months old and are from the same litter and weigh less than 20 pounds each. Frontier permits each passenger to travel with up to two pets, provided that the aircraft can accommodate both. A one-way fee of $100 (for small pet carriers) or $200 (for large containers) will be collected when you check in at the ticketing counter. Please make sure to give yourself extra time for checking in. A health certificate is necessary for all pets. It must be dated within 10 days of outbound travel for itineraries wholly within the U.S. Passengers can use the same certificate for a return flight. Requirements for international destinations vary. Please visit Frontier's website for more information. A Vaccination Certificate is required for all adult dogs and cats whether traveling only within the United States or whether entering a foreign country. If vaccination information isn't included on the Health Certificate, a separate vaccination certificate must be provided. Frontier Airlines observes a summer embargo on pet travel to and from certain destinations because of extreme weather conditions that may be experienced in the cargo areas of its aircraft. If you are traveling with your pet(s) during the summer months, you should review Frontier's website for more information about the embargo.
Carrier Guidelines:
Pet carriers must be leak-proof, ventilated on at least two sides, and must prevent any part of your pet from protruding outside of the container. The container must be constructed of metal, wood, polyethylene plastic or a composite material of similar strength, and have absorbent material on the bottom. No soft-sided containers will be allowed. Food and water dishes must be securely attached inside the travel container and placed so that they can be filled from the outside without opening the door. The container must be large enough to allow your pet to stand up, turn around and lie down in a natural position. The door must latch securely and prevent escape of the pet under normal handling. The container must have handles or adequate devices which support the full weight of the travel container and pet. For more information about Frontier Airlines' carrier guidelines, please visit their website.
Pet Reservations:
Due to the limited space available for pets and the fact that pet travel cannot be booked online, it is important to call Frontier Airlines for reservations as soon as your travel plans are confirmed. Simply call 1-800-432-1359 and advise the reservation agent that your are flying with your pet. Please be aware that certain flights operated by Frontier's codeshare partners - including Great Lakes Aviation - may not accept live animals checked as baggage. The reservation agent for Frontier should be able to confirm that the flights you select can accommodate pets.
